The Neighborhood Of Linwood

Linwood is an older neighborhood in Fort Worth. It is bounded by University Drive and Carroll Street. White Settlement Road is the northern boundary of the neighborhood. Seventh Street is the southern edge of the neighborhood. University Park is on the opposite side of University drive. The Cultural District is south of Seventh Street.

West Seventh Street turns into Camp Bowie Boulevard once it passes University Drive. That takes you to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the UNT Health Science Center. The UNTHSC is the only public medical school in Fort Worth. It consists of five colleges with more than two thousand students.

Linwood is named for Linwood Park. That is in the middle of the neighborhood. Leonard’s Museum is at the northeast corner of the subdivision. The Fort Worth ISD Administrative Building is located at the northeast corner of University Drive and White Settlement Road. This complex includes the Diamond Hill Youth Center. Farrington Field is roughly a mile to the south of Linwood.

The area contains a mix of small homes built before World War 2, redeveloped high density lots with duplexes or luxury 2000+ square foot homes and newer multi-family buildings. There are lots left behind after a century old two bedroom single family home has been torn down available in this area. Note that these are smaller homes. A three bedroom home may only have 1200 square feet. And if it has a garage, the odds are fairly high that it will be a detached rather than attached garage. On the other hand, these smaller homes and properties with just one bathroom come with a much lower price tag than homes close to downtown and the Arts District. The Grand Berry Theater is located in Linwood. It is on Weisenberger Street.

Most students are assigned to North Hi Mount Elementary School, Stripling Middle School and Arlington Heights High School. North Hi Mount Elementary is just west of the UNT Health Science Center. Young Men’s Leadership Academy is just north of the intersection of White Settlement Road and University Drive. If you take White Settlement Road west to North Bailey Avenue, you’d reach the Jo Kelly Special Education building.

The Linwood area received a walk score of 72. You can walk to restaurants and retail. There are restaurants, stores and other amenities along Seventh Street, University Drive, White Settlement Road and Carrol Street. There is also a large commercial area east of Carrol Street.

The area received a public transit score of 40. There are bus routes along Carroll Street and White Settlement Road. It received a bike score of 67, and that hardly factors in the massive network of bike paths along the West Fork of the Trinity River to the north or the Clear Fork to the east.

The area has a medium noise level due to the amount of traffic. FEMA’s flood rating is a six out of ten. The flood risk is worse for homes closer to Trinity Park. The Ahavath Shalom Cemetery north of Linwood is on a hill overlooking the West Fork of the Trinity River. The Fort Worth Branch of the Trinity Trails System passes between it and the river. Linwood residents may pass it going north on University Drive to connect with the Trinity Trail.
