Located on the border between Eastern and Western Texas, Fort Worth is the fifth-largest city in the United States. With the construction of the Texas and Pacific Railways in 1876, Fort Worth saw a boom in the industry. In 1903, the Swift and Armour plants began operating, spurring residential development in the North Side. The Butterfield Overland stage line began operating in 1857. This transportation network supplied the regional market. In 1914, a large storage dam was completed on the West Fork of the Trinity River. This created Lake Worth.

Today, the city of Fort Worth is home to 60 colleges and universities. Some of these schools are located in the Fort Worth area, while others are spread throughout the region. For instance, Texas A&M University is in-state, while Texas Christian University and the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary are both located in Fort Worth. Other leading industries in Fort Worth include manufacturing, oil and gas, technology, distribution, and defense. In addition, there are more than 60 private schools in the area.

The Fort Worth area is also home to a large number of parks, sports facilities, and recreational opportunities. One of the most popular activities is the rodeo. This sport grew from events at local ranches. It has become a popular sporting activity in the city. The Fort Worth Stockyards host weekly rodeos. Other attractions in the area include the Dallas Stars, the Dallas Mavericks, and AT&T Stadium. In addition, four amateur sports teams play in Fort Worth, including the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. The city is also the location of the NCAA football Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.

Fort Worth is home to more than 100 museums. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is one of the top museums in the area, featuring more than 300 pieces of modern art. It also includes a reflecting pool. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is also a popular attraction. The Academy of Western Artists awards annual awards in the city.

Another important cultural institution is the Woman’s Club of Fort Worth. Its first building was located near South Fort Worth, and its members promoted charitable causes and maintained contact with the business community. The Women’s Club of Fort Worth is still active. Its members have supported the local hospital and orphanage.

Fort Worth is also home to the world’s largest indoor rodeo. The Cowtown Coliseum is the site of the Stockyards Championship Rodeo. The Dickies Arena also hosts national college basketball tournaments and is the site of the TCU basketball games.

Other cultural institutions are the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, the John Peter Smith Hospital, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Texas Ballet Theater. The Fort Worth library is located in the city.
