Located on the border between Eastern and Western Texas, Fort Worth is one of the largest cities in the United States. It is a center of commerce and industry, renowned for its rodeo, football, and other sports. It is also known for its cowboy culture. As a result, it has earned the nickname “Cowtown.”

Fort Worth was first settled in 1849 as an Army outpost. In the early part of the twentieth century, a series of railroads brought wealth and population to the city. In the late 1870s, the Texas and Pacific Railway reached the city and helped to stimulate a significant boom.

In the late 1920s, the city’s first professional baseball team, the Fort Worth Cats, began playing in the Texas League. They sent several notable players to Major Leagues. During the ’70s, the Swift and Armour plants opened a mile north of the Trinity River, causing residential growth on the north side.

In the late 1950s, Fort Worth began to take an interest in the arts. In 1957, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra was reorganized. The city also had a strong cultural life, featuring festivals and museums. In 1962, the first Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was held in the Bass Performance Hall in the downtown area.

In 1963, the University Baptist Church in Fort Worth integrated. A year later, the city’s bar admitted African American attorneys. The city was the last large city in Texas to implement a formal integration plan.

In 1967, the city established a Community Relations Commission. It aimed to improve municipal relations with minority groups. The first step was to pass a public accommodation ordinance. The second step was to form a board of commissioners to focus on a particular aspect of municipal administration.

The city is home to many universities, including Texas Christian University, which is nationally competitive in men’s and women’s basketball. The city also has a top-rated public school system. Other major employers include AT&T, Exxon Mobil, BNSF Railway, American Airlines, and Pier 1 Imports.

The Fort Worth Stockyards became the city’s premier center for cattle wholesale trade. The city’s first long drive of longhorn cattle arrived in 1867. During the Civil War, Fort Worth suffered from hard times. But migrant workers swelled the city’s population. In 1910, the population had grown to 73,312 residents.

The city’s economy has since turned to oil and natural gas. These industries have contributed to the city’s status as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. The city is also home to several Fortune 500 companies, including Bell Textron, GM Financial, Pioneer Corporation, and AT&T. In addition to these, the city has many other leading industries, including manufacturing, technology, defense, distribution, and oil and gas.

In 2013, the Fort Worth and Dallas metropolitan area had the largest population growth in the United States. This is expected to continue. The city’s population is expected to reach 1.2 million by 2040.

The modern art museum in Fort Worth features more than 300 pieces of modern art. There are also numerous exhibits about the wild west. The National Cowgirl Museum is dedicated to women of the American West.
